Splendid ‘Night Stories’ staged in Chenzhou Changjuan to celebrate Lantern Festival

At 8 p.m. on March 3 (the 15th day of the first lunar month), accompanied by thunderous gongs and drums and glittering lanterns, the "Chenzhou Night Stories" intangible cultural heritage parade kicked off at the Changjuan Intangible Cultural Heritage Block in Chenzhou.

The event highlighted the national intangible cultural heritage item--Yizhang Night Stories, together with the provincial intangible cultural heritage items like Rucheng Dressed-up Stories and Linwu Night Stories. 11 carefully selected acts of the stories offered an immersive cultural feast for citizens and tourists.

As night fell, the parade procession advanced slowly. With painted facial masks and elaborate opera costumes, performers either stood on decorated platforms or marched amid crowds, vividly reviving ancient folk legends.

Shows were staged one after another, including the witty Seventh-Rank Official on Tour, the delightful The Mouse’s Wedding, the mythical Ne Zha Goes to Sea, the touching Borrowing an Umbrella by West Lake, and the hopeful Chang’e Flying to the Moon, as well as Kunqu Opera, bamboo horse dance, songs, dances and Nuo Opera.

Cheers and applause kept bursting from the crowd.

"I grew up watching 'Night Stories', but tonight’s show is the most stunning," said Zhang Liang, a local resident who brought his child to the event.

"All the traditional stories are preserved, and the costumes are more exquisite. Under the lights, performers look as if they have stepped out of paintings. This is the festive vibe that we should pass on."
