Burning Incense Dragon Dance

The Burning incense dragon dance of Rucheng county is a traditional folk art activity with the powerful dragon, fine structure, exquisite skills, spectacular scenes, warm atmosphere and unique characteristics. It is also a folk entertainment activity held specifically during the Lantern Festival.

It first originated as a ritual for the dragon to stop the rain and water, and its image is mainly derived from murals and sculptures of dragons in local temples. The materials used in its production are mainly locally produced straw, palm leaves, bamboo, sunflower stalks and specially made dragon incense, with the traditional local tying techniques.

Every year, on the occasion of the Spring Festival, the villages across the county hold dragon dances to celebrate the harvest and pray for good weather and good harvest. It is a typical regional culture, and is an authentic scenic attraction of southern Hunan. It is a mass event, with men, women and children from all over the village taking part, contributing money and effort.

More than 100 young and strong people wear straw hats and fireproof clothing, dance the dragon in front of the ancestral shrines and in the fields and villages, with the sounds of firecrackers, gongs and drums.
