Changjuan is a tourism brand inheriting the historical context and combining the trend of the times. It can be hailed as the meeting hall of Chenzhou to welcome friends from Hunan and Guangdong provinces.

Chenzhou, which can date back to the Qin Dynasty (221-207 B.C.), has a history of over 2,200 years.

The Linyi Xiandu historical and cultural block is the first stop when visiting Chuangjuan, where visitors may feel they would travel back to 2,200 years ago.

Touching the history

An average worker laid merely 50 bricks a day. The “snail speed” at building the Gonghe Pharmacy set a record. Instead of loafing on the job, they actually knew that “soft fire makes sweet malt” and their slow work yielded fine products.

During the Xiangnan Uprising , Chen Yi served as the secretary of the Chen County Party Committee and worked in the Gonghe Pharmacy. In order to replicate this old Red site, the craftsmen reworked 13 times, and the whole paint surface was changed for five rounds, so it took four months before it was completed.

The Chenzhou Changjuan is composed of the historical Linyi Xiandu, the ecological Qiqu Xiangu, and the agricultural Tianxia Xiangcun. This is the first part, namely Linyi Xiandu historical and cultural block.

The Linyi Xiandu historical and cultural block uses antique buildings as a carrier to “store” the history, cultural symbols and memories of Chenzhou’s prosperity. In a picture “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains”, the ancient and modern Chenzhou can be visited by each brick and tile.

The design team researched historical materials, visited ancient villages and buildings in 11 counties and urban areas of Chenzhou, collected old bricks and tiles, old wood carvings and old stone carvings that were on the verge of extinction, and walked the entire 90 miles of the ancient Hunan - Guangdong Road to visit the indigenous people, finally used the “Nine Streets and Eighteen Lanes” of Chenzhou as the backdrop and selected out the representative historical buildings of Chenzhou to replicate and restore the Linyi Xiandu historical and cultural block.

The wood carving in southern Hunan can best present the cultural charm of Chenzhou’s regional characteristics. Chenzhou Changjuan sincerely invited Fu Dexiong, a wood carver in Tuqiao Town, Rucheng County, to show off his skills.

Under Fu Dexiong’s rough and deft hands, a piece of wood blooms like a flower.

The old craftsman led his children and grandchildren to inject the soul into the wood with ingenuity, and carved the “Xan Du Fu Quan” memorial archway by hand for three and a half months.

Chenzhou Changjuan restores fragments of history and humanities, copies the genes of folk culture and retains the glory of notable families.

Smelling the books

There is a western-style building in the Changjuan, which was once Cheng Zikai Academy. Nowadays, Cheng Zikai Academy has become Zixing Museum of Chinese studies, where visitors seem to hear students reading aloud and feel moved by the ideals of the aspirants to save the nation through education.

In Guanyun Art Gallery, a group of celebrities in Chenzhou art and literature circles came up with suggestions, making the gallery fascinating.

In a reading concert of 2022, people listened to the music played by the traditional instruments and experienced the cultural beauty. Wang Ya, a writer from Chenzhou, shared “poetry on tea”; Xiao Shui, a poet from Chenzhou and a doctor of literature from Fudan University, talked about ‘Two Sunny Days, Yu Dafu”.

Good books are precious in any era. The atmosphere of reading books in the Chenzhou Changjuan gives readers nourishment for the soul and it takes the responsibility to make the city more cultural and spiritual.

Seeing intangible cultural heritage

It sounds like intangible cultural heritage seems to have its own “ancient” and “enigmatic” labels. In fact, all intangible cultural heritages are closely related to ordinary daily lives.

Four consecutive folk culture festivals have been held. In addition to a series of activities such as the “May Day” National Style Cultural Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, Changjuan also has others such as Guidong Yellow Glutinous Rice Cake and Jiahe Wine to help the public understand intangible cultural heritage at home and help intangible cultural heritage back to life.

To let the intangible cultural heritage see the world, Chenzhou Changjuan opened its arms to the intangible cultural heritage craftsmen and supported inheritance with industrial realization of IPs.

Chenzhou has a profound historical and cultural heritage, and its intangible cultural heritage is also rich. Changjuan displays intangible cultural heritage in multiple dimensions from ancient architecture to folk festivals.

Since ancient times, Chenzhou, the “south gate” of Hunan, has been the throat of Central Plains culture leading to marine culture. Chenzhou Changjuan is located at the center of the intersection of Hunan and Guangdong, which is the “city parlour” that welcomes guests from both Hunan and Guangdong.
