Chenzhou & Kimberley, South Africa

The two cities established friendly-city relationship on September 28, 2016.

Kimberley is the capital of Northern Cape province in the Republic of South Africa. It is the only metropolitan city in the province, and the center of the diamond industry in the world, which enjoys the reputation of the diamond capital in the world. It’s located in the central plateau, with an altitude of 1,220 meters. It has s population of approximately 158,000. Its surrounding area is known for the diamond-rich breccia mica peridotite tubular ore bodies.

The headquarters of De Beers Consolidated Mines, established in 1888, which is the world’s largest diamond producer, is right in Kimberley.

Changsha City and Kimberley established friendly economic and trade cooperation relations on September 25, 2002.

Kimberley was founded in 1870 with the discovery of diamond mines. Despite the serious damage caused by the Anglo-Boer War to the diamond mining industry, it developed rapidly after reconstruction and has become a world-renowned producer of decorative diamonds.

Iron, rock salt, and gypsum are mined near the city. In addition to the diamond processing industry, there are also such industries  as machinery, vehicle assembly, and food. With the local developed irrigation agriculture and animal husbandry, it’s the distribution center of agricultural products in the northern part of Cape province. The main railway line in the city runs southwest to Capetown and northeast to Johannesburg and Pretoria.

There are well-preserved famous buildings such as the Alexander McGregor Memorial Museum and the Duggan-Cronin Gallery in the city. It also has the world’s largest diamond mine with a diameter of about 500 meters and an average depth of 400 meters, making it a key tourist attraction.
