Suxian District Library used to be Chenxian Library, established in January 1931. Chenxian Library was merged into the Chenxian People’s Education Center in 1939.

In 1956, the Chenxian Library was rebuilt in today’s East Renmin Road of Chenzhou City. It housed over 10,000 books, with lending and reading rooms.

In 1957, a two-story house was newly built on Wenhua Road, with the building area expanded to 1,016 square meters.

In 1958, Chenxian Library was placed under the jurisdiction of old Chenzhou City.

In October 1981, the Chenxian Library became independent from the old city. The library was located in the Chenxian Cultural Center, with a building area of 120 square meters. It had a stack room and a reading room, with two staff members.

By 1983, the number of books and magazines in the library had gradually increased to a collection of 4,124 books.

In 1988, 200,000 yuan was raised to build a new library building at No.22 Gaoshanbei Road.

The new library was opened to the public in October 1990, covering an area of 1,095 square meters, with one new computer. The library then had four staffs, 580 people who have reader’s cards, received 6,800 readers throughout the year, and lent 2,200 books.

In December 1994, the library was renamed Suxian District Library. In 2003, 1.5 million yuan was invested to build a library on the original site.

The library was completed in 2006 and opened to the public. The new library covers an area of 1,097 square meters, including publicity and counseling room, editing room, lending room, comprehensive reading room, reference room and offices.

The first floor is children’s reading room with an area of 485 square meters. The computer reading room on the second floor is equipped with 30 computers. In addition, there are 40 adult reading seats and 20 reading seats for teenagers.

On the second floor, the publicity and counseling room, editing room, lending room and comprehensive reading room cover an area of more than 400 square meters.

The reference books hall on the third floor covers an area of more than 110 square meters, with 80 iron bookshelves, a total length of more than 1,000 meters, 23 reading desks, and 100 seats.

At present, the comprehensive cultural quality of the staff has been greatly improved, and the number of staff has increased to 9, all of whom have a college degree or above. The current library houses over 60,000 books and about 400,000 e-books.
