Bamianshan National Nature Reserve included in GLPCA

Bamianshan National Nature Reserve in Hunan Province has been included in the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas, GLPCA, after its work related to ecological environment governance and biodiversity protection successfully passed the assessment. The certification is valid from November 28, 2025 to November 27, 2030.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN, is the world's largest and oldest global non-profit environmental organization. It is also an international organization in the field of natural environment protection and sustainable development as a permanent observer of the United Nations General Assembly.

Headquartered in Gland, Switzerland, since its establishment in 1948, it has gathered the knowledge, resources, and influence of over 1,400 member organizations and more than 15,000 experts, becoming an authoritative institution worldwide for understanding the current state of nature and the measures needed to protect it.

Bamianshan Nature Reserve is located at the intersection of the middle and southern section of Luoxiao Mountains and the northern end of the Nanling Mountains. With superior natural conditions, it is known as the north-south corridor of animals. It is a transitional zone from subtropical to subtropical regions in China, and the natural vegetation is representative of the vegetation community in the Luoxiao Mountain area.

The Bamianshan National Nature Reserve in Hunan Province boasts a large number of preserved silver fir, southern hemlock, and tassel in China, with a relatively intact preservation area and high conservation and scientific research value.

The river system here is an important conservation area for the water source of the Xiangjiang River, and is also an important source of the first level tributaries of the Xiangjiang River, the Mishui River and the Leishui River.

In recent years, Bamianshan Nature Reserve has continuously strengthened its cooperation with research institutes such as the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hunan Academy of Forestry, and Central South University of Forestry, constantly improving its scientific research and ecological monitoring level.

Four new species have been discovered and identified, including the genus Phantasma and the genus Platycodon. A new species of fungus, the Golden Clavier, has been discovered for the first time, adding to the species diversity of the Clavier genus in China.

26 new records of nationally and provincial-level protected plants and general species have been added.

Two fixed sampling sites and nine sampling lines for species protection have been established, and more than 200 infrared cameras have been installed for regular monitoring.

The populations of national first-class protected animals such as Tragopan caboti and Elliot’s pheasant are stable, while the populations of white pheasant and Tibetan macaque are showing an increasing trend.

The cultivation of silver fir seedlings and the research on their return to the wild are in progress.

The joint research team has published a number of papers in domestic and foreign academic journals such as Phytotaxa and Hunan Forestry Science and Technology, providing the latest scientific basis for biodiversity conservation research in the protected area.

It has reached a technical cooperation agreement on the return of rare Rhododendron species with Jinggangshan Nature Reserve in Jiangxi Province, joined the establishment of the “Silver Cedar Conservation Alliance” in 8 protected areas in 4 provinces of Guangxi, Hunan, Guizhou, and Chongqing.

More than 10 reports were reprinted by more than 10 central and provincial media outlets, including China Central Radio and Television Station and Xinhua News Agency. The Bamianshan macaca thibetana appeared on CCTV's "Eye of the Secret Realm".
