Recently, two ancient kiln sites from the Song Dynasty and two oblong pavilions from the Qing Dynasty were founded in Wayaoping of Feitianshan Town.

Luo Shengqiang, associate research fellow of the archaeological research and cultural relics protection center of Chenzhou City, introduced that the porcelain fragments found on site were decorated mainly with such patterns as double fish, water waves and lotus flowers. Some of celadon bowls had “志” and “官” fired on the inner or outer bottom.

According to the shape, glaze color and decorative patterns of the fragments, it’s determined that the kiln wares fired at the two kiln sites are the Hengshan kiln series of the Southern Song Dynasty and Hengzhou kiln series of the Northern Song Dynasty.

“The Feitian Mountain area is one of the distribution areas of ancient kiln sites in Chenzhou. The first excavation of Wayaoping kiln site dates back to 1986, but only one ancient porcelain kiln was discovered at that time.” Luo Shengqiang added that this new archaeological discovery fully proves the existence of a group of ancient kiln sites in Wayaoping that have existed for thousands of years. The porcelain produced in these kilns involves food utensils, tea utensils and wine utensils, with a rich variety and excellent quality. It’s an empirical evidence of the daily life of the people during the Song Dynasty and also represents the ceramic civilization and economic prosperity of this place.

Since the Han Dynasty, Wayaoping has been a key ferry connecting the north and south of China, serving as the starting and ending point of the waterway from Chenzhou to Hengyang and Changsha.

“The discovery of cultural relics not only reveals history, but also promotes the development of cultural tourism integration,” Luo Shengqiang, said that next, the cultural relics and archaeology authority will continue to conduct archaeological investigations, explore more historical information, further enrich people’s understanding of ancient porcelain kilns, and bring more possibilities to the development of cultural tourism in Chenzhou with its profound cultural heritage.
