2025-05-29

In early summer, the waxberries in the 10,000-mu (666.67 hectares) orchard in Shuijinwo Village, Yuxi Town of Yizhang County, Chenzhou City are ripe. The purple and plump waxberries are hanging on branches of waxberry trees, attracting many visitors to experience picking.

Shuijinwo Village is located on a high mountain at an altitude of 600 meters, with a large temperature difference between day and night and fertile soil. It’s a natural treasure land for the growth of waxberry and the largest waxberry planting base in southern Hunan Province and northern Guangdong Province.

The village is only a 5-minute-drive from the county town, making it a “weekend orchard” for surrounding citizens.

In the waxberry garden of Changqiling Ecological Farm, workers are skillfully picking mature waxberries.

Li Juan, head of the farm, said, “Now we hire more than 60 people to pick waxberry every day, with about 3,000 kilograms picked per day. It is expected that the output
this year can reach 100,000 kilograms.”

The village has been planting waxberries for over 30 years. With the fertile soil, suitable climate, and sufficient sunlight, the waxberries produced are large and plump, with a sweet and sour taste, which are highly popular in the market.

The freshly picked waxberries are quickly sent to the sorting and packaging area for sorting and cold chain packaging, before being delivered to various parts of the country.

Li Juan added that now, they have to pack over 500 boxes of waxberries every day for orders from other places of the country, including the remote Xinjiang. Most of them are repeat customers, and many customers have already placed orders before waxberries are ripe.

The village has a waxberry planting area of more than 10,000 mu (666.67 hectares). It’s expected to achieve an output of 7.5 million kg.

The industrial development not only beautifies the ecology, but also enriches the people. Villagers engage in planting, harvesting, packaging, and sales of waxberry to increase income at their doorstep.

Next, the town will gradually expand the waxberry planting area, introduce some excellent waxberry varieties to improve the quality and yield of waxberry. At the same time, it will also improve infrastructure construction by building parking lots and leisure trails to enhance tourists’ experience, so as to increase farmers’ income and promote rural revitalization.
