Early in the morning, Zhou Yongmao, a villager from Zhongjia Village in Mangshan Yao Township, left home to look for bitter bamboo shoots. 

 

With years of picking experience, Zhou Yongmao harvested several large bags of bitter bamboo shoots weighing over 50 kg. Returning home, he dumped the bitter bamboo shoots in the courtyard, and his wife came to help peel them together. After peeling, they simmered bitter bamboo shoots for 30 minutes and cooled them off before sale.

 

 

After the bitter bamboo shoots were cooked, Zhou Yongmao’s wife put some into a few bottles, which will be sent to their two sons who work outside.

 

 

In recent years, with the increasing development of tourism in Mangshan Mountain, the fresh and tender bamboo shoots have been getting popular through homestay inns and restaurants run by local villagers. This industry has become an important way for local villagers to increase income.
